“What would you do if you had more time?”, asked the coach.

She pondered and thought about it. She had all the time she needed, she just wasn’t doing anything worthwhile with it.

“Are you feeling low?”, he continued.

“Not really”, was her prompt reply; “I’m just feeling aimless”, she ventured after a few moments.

“hmm.. tell me more”, the coach said.

January had started, people were supposed to create their new year resolutions and set goals… and there she was, committing the biggest crime that a human can — wasting time!! and it was a waste because she wasn’t spending it on something enjoyable… she just felt lost and was meandering, doing things that were unimportant.

“You know coach, i’m falling prey to compulsive action”, she said.

She was far from being motivated & inspired. She was just existing and beating herself up at not doing something valuable. Her goals stared back at her and she wasn’t able to pick herself up and work on them.

When i studied this case, i realised, that there are many people who are facing similar challenges, especially as the pandemic continues to rage on…

And the big reason is that the pandemic has sucked out our ENDURANCE — the ability to withstand adversity, pain and discomfort.

In the past, if you fell sick or if a family member was unwell, unless it was a life threatening situation, you’d generally bounce back to your usual self in a few days. Your endurance helped you.

Now, if sickness happens, it could be days or weeks till you felt like showing up.

If you are feeling this way, know that you are not alone… Here are possible reasons why your endurance could be draining out..

  1. Goals: Your goals could be so audacious that you are overwhelmed where to start and hence are choosing to waste time rather than attack that goal.
  2. Health: Your physical or mental health could have depleted, either due to sickness of self or friends and family…. and that may put you back on the bottom rung of Maslow’s hierarchy and with endurance ebbing out, your could be finding it difficult to work your way up from the bottom rung.
  3. Lifestyle: You could have not yet recognised that your lifestyle has changed, mostly due to the pandemic…. and that could be causing some strain or expectations mismatch.

Everyday we make a choice — should i wake up to fear or fulfillment? should i take compulsive action or intentional action?

Today, I offer you a few questions for self reflection, and for that little nudge to pull you out of aimlessness …

  1. what do you need more of right now?
  2. what could you do less of right now?
  3. how do you want to show up from tomorrow?
